Workshop objectives
You know that Portugal hasn’t replaced generations since 1981, and that we are one of the oldest countries in the world. We have fewer children but we live longer, yet emigration increases with the decline in living conditions. That the main cause of death in the country is… And that Portugal has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world, in countries like Guinea Bissau or S. Tomé, isn’t that quite true? Maybe this is all common sense, or maybe it’s demographic analysis. In this workshop, we intend to shed light on looking at demography as a science around the tree of life.
The speakers bring to debate different national and international perspectives on looking at the demographic transition, sociodemographic transformations such as the impact of April 25th on education, or the evolution of causes of mortality, among other topics.

PopNews is an infoletter from the Demography Laboratory – CIDEHUS, UÉ, which aims to make the most relevant aspects of demography and socio-demographic transformation accessible to the reader, whether academic or not.

PopNews resumes its publication, with a compilation of 5 issues resulting from a partnership between the Demography Laboratory and the LifeSpan cathedral, at the University of Évora.

The numbers presented deal with demographic, sociological and geographic perspectives from the perspective of Life Span.

After World War II, historiography was renewed with the expansion of its interpretative framework and the multiplication of analytical fields. In the 1980s, the idea of ​​“continuous progress” of civilizations was called into question and the hitherto dominant models were challenged. This led to the multiplication of analytical currents and paradigms. The historiographical landscape has diversified and become more complex.

In Portugal, monitoring historiographical developments was conditioned by the opening permitted by the Estado Novo, but was not disconnected from foreign historiographical schools. Fellows and readers, expatriate historians and foreign historians served as mediators and introducers of different historiographical lines. After the 25th of April, direct access to these new historiographical practices changes the exchange models.
