After World War II, historiography was renewed with the expansion of its interpretative framework and the multiplication of analytical fields. In the 1980s, the idea of ​​“continuous progress” of civilizations was called into question and the hitherto dominant models were challenged. This led to the multiplication of analytical currents and paradigms. The historiographical landscape has diversified and become more complex.

In Portugal, monitoring historiographical developments was conditioned by the opening permitted by the Estado Novo, but was not disconnected from foreign historiographical schools. Fellows and readers, expatriate historians and foreign historians served as mediators and introducers of different historiographical lines. After the 25th of April, direct access to these new historiographical practices changes the exchange models.
