Mário Soares. Campaigns in the South
To mark the dual celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25 April Revolution and the centenary of the birth of one of its most prominent politicians, the Centre for Research into History, Cultures and Societies at the University of Évora (CIDEHUS.UÉ) accepted the challenge set by the Mário Soares Foundation and has prepared an exhibition highlighting the coverage given by the main regional media outlets to Mário Soares’s presence in the region.
With the exhibition ‘Mário Soares: Campaigns in the South’, CIDEHUS is launching a new series of academic and cultural activities. Entitled ‘25 April: 50 Years of Freedom’, it serves as a focal point designed to bring together various initiatives. Its primary aim is to promote research into Portugal’s recent past, focusing on the Estado Novo and the changes introduced in 1974.
Underpinning the research for this exhibition and the catalogue, which will be available in digital format, is an exploration of one of the key figures of the 25 April Revolution and the establishment of democracy in Portugal: Mário Soares (1924–2017).
Its aim is to deepen our understanding of life in the southern region, an area that has been extensively documented through photographs, which CIDEHUS has endeavoured to analyse critically. This is an initial initiative, taking the form of travelling exhibitions, to disseminate what is known about these campaigns, drawing primarily on the local press.
