OBJECTIVES
The PhD in Tourism at the University of Évora aims to provide specialized training in Tourism, equipping doctoral candidates both for professional practice with high-level competencies in private, public, and third-sector organizations, and for a career in scientific research and teaching.
In this learning journey, PhD students have the opportunity to engage in ongoing projects across various research centers (among which CIDEHUS stands out), Academic Chairs, and projects within the framework of ASTO – Alentejo Sustainable Tourism Observatory, integrated into UNTourism’s international INSTO network. They will also be able to connect with and participate in initiatives and projects developed jointly with companies or other organizations, broadening their experience and strengthening their connection to the professional market.
COMPETENCIES TO BE DEVELOPED
A PhD graduate in Tourism from the University of Évora should demonstrate the ability to:
– Mobilize advanced knowledge of principles, theories, and practices in key areas of Tourism related to sustainability;
– Conduct research activities that enable the autonomous execution of scientific work in Tourism with high application potential;
– Think logically, intuitively, and creatively to identify opportunities for improvement in the tourism sector;
– Propose innovative solutions through theories, techniques, and tools from the scientific domain of Tourism;
– Apply acquired knowledge and resources to substantiate proposals that contribute to the sustainable development of Tourism;
– Communicate and promote knowledge in Tourism resulting from research work at national and international meetings, fostering integration into national and international networks.
These competencies are further deepened by each student throughout their academic journey, within the domain defined by their doctoral thesis topic.
STUDY PLAN
The PhD in Tourism is structured over three academic years: the first year consists of the taught component (60 ECTS), while the remaining two years are dedicated to the preparation of the Doctoral Thesis (120 ECTS).
Completion of the taught component of the PhD in Tourism (60 ECTS), excluding the thesis, earns the Doctoral Program Diploma. Completion of both the taught component and the thesis (180 ECTS) confers the Doctoral Degree.
